Important Terms

Assault rifle - A selective fire weapon (semi automatic and fully automatic) and has a removable magazine.
ATF - Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The ATF regulates the sale, possession, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, in interstate commerce.
Brady Campaign - Group that put into place the 5 day waiting period on handguns.
District of Columbia v. Heller - The first case that directly address whether the right to bear arms is a right to individuals, or a collective right that applies only to State regulated militias. They went with the individuals
Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975 - The law banned residents of DC from owning handguns, automatic firearms, and high-capacity semi-automatic firearms. The law was overturned on March 9, 2007.
Gun Control - Regulations of any kind put on guns.
Hollow-point - A hollow point is designed to mushroom open after it enters the target. Hollow points can’t pierce Kevlar vests, while regular bullets can. Also reduces the chance of wounding innocent people because of over penetrating bullets. They are sometimes called cop killers even though they can't pierce their Kevlar vests.
NRA - National Rifle Association. One of the most powerful lobbying organizations in the country. They aim to protect the second amendment.
Revolver - Differs from semi automatic pistols. Revolvers are not the target of most debates because they have smaller capacity and slower fire rate.
Second Amendment - A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Semi-Automatic pistol - A semi-automatic weapon is any gun that fires 1 bullet every time the trigger is pulled. These guns load another round into the chamber by using the energy created by the previous round being fired. This type of firearm is primarily used for self defense and is the cause for most debate.
